PIDGE GUNDERSON
Player: Stark
Canon: Voltron: Legendary Defender
Canon Point: Episode 9
Alignment: Thras
Date of Entry: 11/06/2016

Age: 14
Birthday: April 3
Eye Color: Brown
Hair Color: Light Brown
Height: 5'
Amulet: An Armillary Sphere contained within a protective casing of spherical crystal. It doesn't seem to function, and the mechanism seems to turn at random with little rhyme or reason.
Appearance: Petite with a slender, angular build that emphasizes scuffed knees and awkward teeth, Pidge is the sort of person who cares less about appearances and more about practicality. Her thick, bushy hair is cut short and prone to being unruly, and she doesn't necessarily need the glasses she insists on wearing.

Those who know her family can easily tell that she's a dead ringer for her older brother, who has been lost for over a year.

☄ First Impressions

♚ VISUAL: Tiny and scrappy, Pidge is a kid who is easily underestimated and misunderstood at first glance because of her baggy, awkward clothes, unruly hair and generally immature appearance. Few would easily guess that she's a technological genius with hand-to-hand combat skills who would be more than willing to take on enemies twice her size. She often has some sort of scuffs on her arms and legs due to this.
♚ FASHION: Geek chic + comfortable, with tomboyish leanings. She doesn't care about your comfort, only her own.
♚ DEMEANOUR: Pidge's general demeanor is akin to that of a livewire-- constantly full of energy, with many emotions rolling under the surface that allows her to switch between her awkward charm and sparking irritability in the blink of an eye.
♚ AURAL: Still a 14 year old with a developing body, Pidge's voice is still in an awkward phase of development. For the moment she tends to default to an alto-tone that hits the midway point between that of a young woman or a young man, although it pitches higher when she's startled or angry. For the most part she tends to veer into the lower tones of her range-- particularly when she's rambling-- and it will be a tough bet to get her to sing.
♚ OLFACTORY: Pidge bathes regularly, although that's a side effect of leading a lifestyle that can and will get her sweaty and covered in dirt at any given point in time. It really depends on the time of day that she's caught in. She doesn't use fragrances or fancy soaps or shampoos.
♚ MENTAL INFORMATION: Pidge is a technical genius who likely has some manner of eidetic memory that anchors her ability to swiftly analyze new data and understand the basics of utterly foreign languages and technology with astonishing speed. She definitly has an above average intellect.
♚ MAGICAL INFORMATION: Nothing of importance, unless an odd empathic connection to a 10,000 year old green robotic space lion counts as anything.

☄ OOC

♚ BACKTAGGING: Yes, always.
♚ FOURTHWALLING: No. Voltron itself has had far too many incarnations, and Pidge is liable to be extremely unhappy if people know anything about her that she doesn't divulge.
♚ PHYSICAL AFFECTION: Yes, as long as it's platonic. She's 14, people.
♚ PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Sure. She is more than willing and capable of defending herself if there's a problem.
♚ RELATIONSHIPS: I'm more interested in platonic, pseudo-familial relationships with her due to her age. If anyone wants to end up in the position of an 'older sibling figure' for her or something, I'm totally down.

☄ Permissions

This is less of a permission and more of a warning: Pidge is walking spoilers for a very minor plot point that comes up midway through season one, and it's impossible to avoid without getting into odd narrative twists I don't really like. If you're one of the few who *hasn't* been spoiled although I'm sure you are now due to reading this, please let me know if you want me to completely avoid tagging with you.

For those who have seen the show or just don't care about spoilers, I want to explain that I use feminine pronouns for Pidge simply because she calls herself a girl. I do not play her with any of the nonbinary/trans headcanons that are popular on Tumblr simply because 1) there is no canonical evidence for it, and 2) I'm not in those communities, and I'm not comfortable playing her like that.

If you have trouble with that, please contact me privately. I don't mind conversation, but I don't want to become involved in a fight over this either.

Character: Pidge Gunderson
Age: 14

Canon Point: Episode 9

Background: Wiki Link

Personality:
Katie Holt-- or Pidge Gunderson as she chooses to be called, is a very intelligent and creative individual whose determination to find her answerers goes hand in hand with her drive to protect those that she cares about. The two factors are inseparable elements to her personality, and are the cause of the seemingly rash decisions she is seen to make. Pidge is the sort to dedicate herself to every task with equal gusto, and the source of her internal strength comes from the combined forces of her drive for finding her family, protecting her friends, exploring the world around her, and fighting the menace that is the Galra Empire.

Though awkward and sometimes standoffish, Pidge's love and dedication is clear more in her actions than words. She doesn't give up, and even under threat of trial and possible detainment, she still obscured her identity and entered the Galaxy Garrison as a student just to find out the truth about what happened to her father and brother after they went missing on a scientific expedition. Her cleverness didn't stop there, as she made her own equivalent of a ham radio with a range that spanned the entirety of the known solar system in order to intercept any secret transmissions that could relate to the fate of her family, and she most likely built this device between harrowing military training drills and classes, as well as after the mandatory curfew. She eschewed all social interactions during this period, although she did form a bond with her assigned team mates during this time-- as evidenced by her playful teasing with Lance and Hunk at odds moments before they were all part of Team Voltron.

Notably, Pidge's standoffishness comes into play when she sees that there is something she can do to further her goals, when she feels like she is being disrespected or talked down to, or when anyone unwittingly gets close to the subject of her goals and identity. Her status as a girl is something that she kept a guarded secret during the many months she was attending Galaxy Garrison, and it's a secret that follows her for half of the series-- at least, until she feels she needs to come clean to her teammates. The same goes with her goal to find her family, as that would have likely landed her in prison at best. Revealing this to the team after a crisis was like taking a weight off her chest... although, she keeps using the name Pidge out of comfort and familiarity.

Alongside the standoffishness is a dogged stubbornness when she finds a clue to her ultimate goals. Regardless of what's happening around her, she latches onto a single fact that she can do something about and perseverates about it until she can finally make a move. To that end, when she is in the middle of such a task, delicacy and even her own safety are secondary. When she was infiltrating the engine rooms during her acts to retake the Castle of Lions, Pidge ultimately ends up taking the route of Percussive Maintenance to stop the system's launch sequence by slamming her Bayard into the internal wiring mechanisms. Similarly, when they found a Galra database that included data on all the prisoners the ship had carried-- including Pidge's father and brother, Pidge was willing to let herself get caught in the explosion of an incoming projectile just to get the data she needed. She is very singularly focused, to the point where it is a weakness as much as it is a strength.

She doesn't seem to care one way or the other about gender norms. Even after revealing herself, she keeps wearing the baggy and functional clothes that she had been wearing the entire time. She was also only acting in name and identity only; her personality was always the same. For better or for worse, this socially awkward girl who cares more about robots than small talk, who is determined to do right by her friends, family, and herself, can't be anyone else but the person that she chooses to be.

And, whether she goes by Pidge or Katie, she takes comfort in the fact that Shiro, the last person to see her family alive, assures her that her father and brother would be proud of her.

Abilities:
Daring and creativity are personality traits associated with the Paladins who handle the Green Lion, and Pidge exemplifies both of these traits in her personality and skills. Though she is physically the smallest is the team, she dives head first into anything that she sees could possibly help her find her family or save her friends from danger with barely a second thought. Additionally, she is quick witted enough to use her small stature to her advantage-- with a combination of stealth tactics and the physical training she recieved at Galaxy Garrison, Pidge single handedly retook control of the ancient Castle of Lions after it was hijacked by the Galra. Her only downfall during that was her lack of physical power to take on the general when they met in the bridge.

But the physical skills are just a small part of what Pidge can accomplish. A technical genius and hacking prodigy , she was able to break into top secret databases without much difficulty-- a fact that seems to embarrass the military-- and she built a high grade communications transceiver to intercept any radio signals thoughout the solaar system. She is able to compile data that, even if she doesn't understand it immediately, she knows will be useful at some point in the future. Additionally, these hacking abilities extend to alien technology. While we don't know her fluency in the alien languages yet, we know that she has figured out enough to piece together the information she needs.

Additionally, she is constantly making modifications to both her Lion and the travel pod that she uses. These mods are done quickly, and no one seems to know exactly when she does them-- it's entirely possible that she can forego sleep for long periods because of her dedication to her work.

Alignment: Thras. As the Paladin who flies the Green Lion, Pidge exemplifies the creativity and sense of daring that is traditional amongst those who fill this role. Despite her many conflicting emotions that roll under the surface and the obvious obstacles of her small stature, inexperience, and youth, Pidge is still the first one of the Paladins to take on a Galra soldier and win using the resources around her, and she was the first one to encounter Commander Sendak face-to-face and attempt to take him on in a physical fight. Furthermore, she has a history of taking foolhardy actions with full knowledge that she will face severe consequences when she is caught-- like when she first attempted to steal data from the Galaxy Garrison and entered the academy under the guise of a male student after she was found out and banned from the premises-- because she feels that the course of action is the right thing to do.

CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: "Pidge Gunderson" (alias of Katie Holt)
Character Canon: Voltron

History: Wiki Link

AU History: A Gigan civillian, born and raised, Katie was always noted for her odd intellect and determined personality as a child. It was only natural, seeing as she was the youngest daughter of an esteemed scientist and the younger sister of an engineering prodigy. It was expected that she would one day follow in their footsteps and take a position in the engineering division of the Gigan military...until word came to her and her mother that the two men in their family went missing due to mistakes made in the wilderness. Knowing that neither her father nor her brother would be that sloppy, Pidge made every effort to uncover the truth of their whereabouts-- even going so far as to illegally enter the offices of various commanders, and having her name blackballed across the board.

Seeing that she wasn't going to be able to get answers the conventional way, Katie took matters into her own hands.

Cutting her hair and taking with her only the bare minimum of tools and the two pokemon her brother had given her, Katie set off into the wilds on her own. The only person who was given any clue of her whereabouts was her mother, who was left a note before Katie slipped out of the city.

Adopting the alias "Pidge Gunderson" as an extra protective measure, she further obscured her identity and made it that much harder for people to trace her.

It was just as well-- it would give her that much more freedom of movement, which was necessary if she was going to succeed in finding her family. Through the flow of rumors that travelled across the lands, she caught wind of the strange things happening around the city of Union and decided to make her way there. If there was any place on this continent that might have the answers to her family's whereabouts, it had to be there. And, as a scrappy little troublemaker with a penchant for exploring and the keen mind of an engineer, there wasn't a better place that she could think of as a base for her quest.

AU Deviation: The most crucial deviations in Pidge's character are reliant on the very nature of the setting. As there seems to be no Military Schools in Gigas that we are aware of, there was no reason for her to infiltrate such an institution and come up with the entire masquerade of disguising herself as a boy. Rather than outright declaring herself as anything but 'Pidge', she has made no move to actually define her gender one way or the other in the context of this interpretation. Instead, she has left it open ended, for people to make judgements and interpretations of their own.

In fact, the obscuring of her gender can be seen as a protective measure, since a small young woman in the wilderness tends to be in far more danger than a small young man. Also, it strengthens the chances of people taking her seriously.

Secondly, the nature of the incident where her father and brother went missing I am leaving ambiguous, because there is no space travel in this setting. Rather than the literal rocket science Pidge studies in canon, she is going to be focused more on general engineering as it relates to making life easier in the wilderness-- both for combat and non-combat reasons.

Thirdly, there is no Voltron, no space lions, and no Altean Empire-- or any analogues to them-- in this setting. Pidge is just Pidge, uninfluenced by the grander plot that is prevalent in her canon. While the core aspects of her drive and her goals are the same, there is much more room for growth in many different areas than there would be otherwise.

Canon Abilities: Daring and creativity are personality traits associated with the Paladins who handle the Green Lion, and Pidge exemplifies both of these traits in her personality and skills. Though she is physically the smallest is the team, she dives head first into anything that she sees could possibly help her find her family or save her friends from Faber with barely a second thought. Additionally, she is quick witted enough to use her small stature to her advantage-- with a combination of stealth tactics and the physical training she recieved at Galaxy Garrison, Pidge single handedly retook control of the ancient Castle of Lions after it was hijacked by the Galra. Enlightened Abilities: Far From Ordinary, with the Engineer perk. While she's not Enlightened, she's daring and agile enough to pick up physical skills quickly and, with the right equipment and strategies, would be more than willing to enter into actual combat. Her tactics are more reliant on using distractions, her agility, and her trust in her pokemon.

I would also like to request a small, Electric-typed blade that can stun people on contact. It would be something she likely made on her own, and is the closest equivilent to the Bayard that she carries in canon. The grappling hood function of her Bayard is a function that will be added on later.

Starter Pokémon: Emolga and Magnemite

Notes/Special Considerations: Pidge has actually spent the better part of the last several months in the Refuge area rather than in Gigan territories....seeking answers and, incidentally, refuge in the strange, underground city as she went about on her expedition. She knows little to nothing about what's happening currently in Gigas, beyond rumors that she catches from others who are travelling.

I have also left the names of Sam and Matt Holt ambiguous, just in case someone wants to come and fill in the void via AU at a later time.
